Stay Safe with the Right Tyres

Tyres – Supply, Fitting, Balancing & Repairs

Your tyres are the only part of your car that touch the road — so grip, braking, and fuel economy all depend on them. At Freelance Mechanics, we supply and fit budget, mid-range, and premium tyres for all makes and models, with fast turnaround and honest pricing.

Not all punctures mean you need a new tyre. Our technicians can examine your flat tyre and let you know if it can be repaired.

If you have a nail or screw in the main tread region of the tyre, i.e. the part that touches the road, then there’s a real chance we can repair it for you.

Do I Need New Tyres? A Simple 5-Step Check

You can do these quick checks at home in a few minutes:

  • Place a 20p coin into the tyre’s main grooves.

  • If you can see the outer band of the coin, your tread may be below 1.6mm (the UK legal minimum).

  • Under 3mm? Consider replacing soon for better wet-weather braking.

  • Look across the whole tyre: inner/outer edges, centre, and shoulders.

  • Inner/outer edge wear often points to misalignment.

  • Centre wear can indicate over-inflation; both edges can mean under-inflation.

  • Any cords or fabric visible = replace immediately.

  • Check sidewalls and tread for cuts, splits, bubbles, or blisters.

  • A bulge usually means internal damage from potholes or kerbs — unsafe to drive; replace right away.

  • Find the DOT date code (e.g., 2219 = week 22 of 2019).

  • Tyres older than 5–6 years can harden and lose grip, even with good tread. Consider replacing for safety.

  • Compare pressures to your car’s sticker (fuel flap/door jamb/handbook).

  • If the car pulls, vibrates, or feels sloppy in corners, you may need alignment, balancing, or replacement tyres.
